So I've left my "cake tips" post up for the frosting recipe. But in the years since I created that post, I've come across even a more delicious way to make a cake mix better. Here it is:
1 packaged cake mix (any flavor)
1/2 C water
1/2 Cup oil or melted butter
1 Cup Sour Cream (I never measure - why dirty that cup? just 1 large scoop or a half of a 16oz container)
4 eggs
1 pkg (3oz) of instant pudding mix.
Bake as directed on box mix.
Side note: Lemon pudding (even just half of the pkg) is not a substitute for vanilla. It never will be. Don't try to add it to a yellow cake thinking "it's barely any, it will probably work". It won't. I know.
Also, enjoy this photo of my dad with an oreo cake I made for his birthday. He has diabetes. He had it long before I delivered the cake.
